Pauper Magic

a competitive, all-commons format of Magic: the Gathering

There are several reasons I think Ning is a good direction to explore for the future of PDC's web presence.

First, it's free. You can't argue with that.

Second, it allows for much greater user input in the creation and maintenance of content, data, and information. More people can do more stuff at any time, without worrying as much about access levels and all that.

Third, it allows for 'commenting' on almost every type of content, which is (IMO) a huge benefit. We can begin attaching metagame data directly to the event via a comment on the event posting, for example.

Fourth, it has a streaming audio player, perfect for podcasts.

Fifth, it has built-in chat, which is quite snazzy.

There are many other benefits, I'm sure.

Naturally, there are some drawbacks in comparison to PDCMagic.com. That's unavoidable. However, the perks of that site come largely at the expense of the blood, sweat, and tears of a small group of dedicated people. As recent PDC trends show, the community cannot count on these "pillars" to be around at all times to continue fixing problems and greasing the cogs of the machine.

That's why this social networking site seems to be a superior option for the community. The structure will endure as community leaders come and go. Members will not be "locked out" of key aspects of organizing the community simply because certain admins have all the access.

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but a juncture like this is going to come sooner or later, and my thought is that there's no better time than the present to begin the transfer!

I hope you'll share some of my enthusiasm for the new potential opened by a web presence at Ning!
